Landmark of remembrance: Ashby American Legion looks to maintain Veterans Memorial

Fergus Falls Daily Journal - 4/11/2019

April 11-- Apr. 11--The Ashby American Legion will be hosting a fundraiser for the Ashby Veterans Memorial this Friday, April 12 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. The fundraiser will include a baked potato bar with all the fixings, a meat raffle, silent auction and the opportunity to take pictures with restored WWII-era vehicles.

Funds raised at the event will go toward maintaining the Veterans Memorial, including groundskeeping costs and power. The memorial was built in the early 1990s and celebrated its 25th anniversary two years ago. To commemorate the event, the American Legion hosted its first fundraiser then in order to get planters and lighting and for the memorial.

At Friday's event, participants can get their photos taken with a WWII-era Harley Davidson motorcycle, a 1942 M3AI Diamond T half-track or a WWII Jeep for an optional donation. The Harley Davidson is owned by Jerome Hanson of Hoffman, who takes the motorcycle to different events to raise money for veterans. The half-track and Jeep will be brought by Brent Johnson of Evansville.

There will also be a meat raffle and silent auction. The silent auction will include baskets donated by local businesses and individuals, including a Minnesota basket, patriotic wine basket, Italian night basket and International beverage basket. The Living Treasures Garden Club of Ashby also donated a garden basket.

The Ashby Veterans Memorial features five black granite stones, 80 inches tall, which honor the five branches of the military: the Army, Coast Guard, Air Force and Navy. Each stone is engraved with the corresponding branch's motto and the date it was founded.
