Kids give a Valentine's Day salute to veterans

The Enterprise - 2/11/2018

WEAST BRIDGEWATER ith a smile and a salute, dozens of third-graders at the Gordon Mitchell Middle School in East Bridgewater met with two local veterans for an early Valentine's Day celebration Friday.

The students took turns presenting Valentines-themed thank-you cards to World War II veteran James Newell, 92, and Navy officer Lorraine Widner, who both have family attending the school.

The cards were all handmade, and children had the opportunity to present them individually to Newell and Widner - most finished their greeting with a salute.

Newell's granddaughter Mellisa Leonard teaches at the school, and helps organize the annual event. Her son, and Newell's great-grandson, Corey, is a student, as is Widner's daughter, Robin.

Although some of the cards were intended for Newell and Widner, many were meant for veterans at the Veteran's Affairs Medical Center in Brockton, where Lorraine Widner is a nurse. She plans on delivering the cards in time for Valentine's Day.
