Fayetteville VA to host 'Whole Health' workshop

Fayetteville Observer - 3/25/2018

March 25--The Fayetteville VA Medical Center will host a workshop Monday to introduce veterans, soon-to-be veterans and Department of Veterans Affairs employees to its Whole Health initiative.

The meeting is 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Fayetteville VA Health Care Center at 7300 S. Raeford Road. Reservations are required.

The Whole Health initiative is part of a shift from treating disease to focusing on individual patients, officials said. It also is known as personalized, proactive or patient-driven care.

"VA facilities across the country are shifting from a health care system focused primarily on treating disease to a whole health approach rooted in forming continuous healing relationships and partnerships that support veterans in achieving their greatest overall well-being," said Dr. Sita Kanithi, the Fayetteville VA's recovery coordinator.

Kanithi, one of the workshop organizers, said whole health recognizes the patient as a whole person and helps support his or her unique needs.

"Whole health goes beyond your illnesses, injuries or disabilities," she said. "It focuses on your values and aspiration, your health and well-being and includes self-care and complementary therapies (such as acupuncture, massage and yoga), along with your conventional medical care."
