Waynesboro offers banners to recognize its veterans

The Herald-Mail - 6/26/2018

WAYNESBORO, Pa. - For the past several years, banners honoring the memory of fallen or missing-in-action service members have been mounted on light poles in downtown Waynesboro during the weeks surrounding Memorial Day.

This November, Mainstreet Waynesboro Inc. is seeking to honor all veterans with Waynesboro ties by offering additional banners for purchase.

The new banners will be unveiled in a ceremony before being hung downtown in mid-October, and they will remain through the week of Veterans Day, according to a news release.

The guidelines are:

Banners must be dedicated to prior or current service in any branch of the U.S. armed forces or National Guard.

They must be for those on active duty, retired or honorably discharged.

Service members must be graduates or former students of the Waynesboro Area School District, a current resident or property owner, or a native of the greater Waynesboro area.

The banners cost $150 each and will hang during the same time period for the next three years.

Information forms are available at Mainstreet Waynesboro's office at 13 W. Main St., the Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce and online at www.mainstreetwaynesboro.org.

Along with the form, those nominating a veteran must submit a clear photograph of the veteran in uniform; a copy of a DD214 form or other proof of service; and $150 fee in the form of cash, check or money order for the banner, brackets and maintenance.

When it is time to renew after three years, sponsors and families may choose to pay the fee again or pick up the banner to keep, the release said.

The purchase deadline for this year is Aug. 1.
