Events for kids, veterans and more during Perry County Fair week

Perry County Tribune - 7/11/2018

NEW LEXINGTON - The annual Perry County Fair will kick off Monday (July 16). The traditional crowning of the fair queen and king along with a demolition derby will cap off the first day of the fair.

Fair board president Tom Spohn says that a lot of work has already gone in to keeping the attendance figures as strong this year.

"We start off with the rodeo, motocross is on Tuesday, the rough truck on Wednesday, the tug pull and ATV pull on Thursday and the demo derby on Friday," said Spohn. "We have a lot of events scheduled that people have grown accustomed to at the fair."

Admission to the fair will be $10. Those who plan on going to the fair on multiple days can take advantage of purchasing fair passes. A membership pass will cost just $25, Spohn says that a four-use ride pass will also be available to purchase for $20.

"Where can you go for $10 and have an opportunity to take in entertainment and ride rides for that price?" said Spohn. There will also be some new and different rides available along the midway, according to Spohn.

"The kids and the community have been our focus leading up to the fair," said Peg Snider, a member of the fair board. "We are excited about our 4-H kids and their projects and for our (high school) seniors this will be their last year at the fair. We have interesting attractions and projects and we are all excited with what the Historical Society has planned."

For the eighth year the Perry County Historical Society will coordinate the Antique Exhibit at the County Fair.

"The Society was asked in 2011 if they would like to take charge of this event by the Fair Board and we have stepped up and played our part every year" says Rick Akers, Society President.

The theme will be "Perry County Schools". Everyone is encouraged to dig out their old treasures from back in the day and bring them down to display. The more unique the better, all types of antiques will be accepted for display and judging.

Akers remarked, "We hope this event will continue to grow and help bring more people to the Fair and also make more people aware of the Historical Society and hopefully increase our membership."

Drop off will be on Sunday from 11-4 p.m. Anyone not able to make those times should call Rob Dishon, (917-453-7203) to make other arrangements, however, all items should be in place by Sunday afternoon. Pick-up will be the following Sunday same hours.

The Perry County Fair will be honoring Veterans this year by dedicating opening day as "Veterans Day".

Veterans will be admitted to the fair for free on Monday, July 16, 2018 at the main entrance of the fair grounds.

Veterans will need to provide proof of military service such as: current Military/Retiree/Reserve Component identification card, Perry County Veterans ID card, or military discharge (DD Form 214).

Perry County Veteran's Services Commission (VSC) will provide veterans with a $10 voucher for the purchase of their lunch at one of the local food vendors on the opening day of the fair - Monday, July 16.

One voucher will be issued per person and will be available at the Main Gate.

Questions may be addressed to the Perry County Fair office at 740-342-1485 or the Perry County Veterans office at 740-342-2536.

"We have been working on projects to improve the fairgrounds and adding new things," said Snider. "We are just hoping that it will not be too hot or rain too much, we are hoping for some nice weather during fair week for a change."

The annual Perry County Fair will run from July 16-21.
